Why this match matters in the league phase
Since the 2024 reform, the Champions League brings 36 clubs together in a single league phase. Each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents. The top eight in the table qualify directly for the round of 16, while the teams placed 9th to 24th go into the play-offs.
On matchday 5, only three matches remain after this one: matchday 6 on 8 and 9 December, then the last two in January 2027. For Lens, this trip to Germany opens the French clubs’ European week: Lille and PSG play the following day.
The Red Bull Arena, the former Zentralstadion
The Red Bull Arena was built on the site of Leipzig’s former Zentralstadion. It is home to RB Leipzig and hosted matches at the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2024 in Germany.
The other French clubs also play this week: PSG vs Roma (Wednesday 25 November) and Lille vs Bayern Munich (Wednesday 25 November). The full schedule is in our article Champions League matchday 5: the 24 and 25 November schedule.
