Why this match matters in the league phase
Since the 2024 reform, the Champions League brings 36 clubs together in a single league phase. Each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents. The top eight in the table qualify directly for the round of 16, while the teams placed 9th to 24th go into the play-offs.
On matchday 5, only three matches remain after this one: matchday 6 on 8 and 9 December, then the last two in January 2027. Hosting Bayern Munich, one of the most successful clubs in the competition, is one of the toughest fixtures on Lille’s calendar this season.
The Stade Pierre-Mauroy, a stadium built for European nights
Opened in 2012 in Villeneuve-d’Ascq, the Stade Pierre-Mauroy holds around 50,000 spectators and has a retractable roof. It is one of the largest stadiums in France, and its sold-out European nights are among the highlights of football in the north of France.
The other French clubs also play this week: PSG vs Roma (Wednesday 25 November) and Leipzig vs Lens (Tuesday 24 November). The full schedule is in our article Champions League matchday 5: the 24 and 25 November schedule.
