An adaptation by Dolly Alderton
A British journalist, podcaster and novelist, Dolly Alderton is known for her contemporary take on love and friendship. Her six-part adaptation gives Jane Austen’s novel more room than a feature film: the relationships between the Bennet sisters, the weight of money and marriage, and the slow evolution of the feelings between Elizabeth and Darcy can develop fully.
What the series will actually change in the plot has not been detailed: we will not speculate before release.
Previous adaptations: 1995 and 2005
Published in 1813, Pride and Prejudice has been adapted many times. Two versions are the benchmarks: the 1995 BBC series with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, and Joe Wright’s 2005 film with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. The Netflix version, longer than the film and more recent than the BBC series, will have to find its place between those two models.
How to watch the series in the best conditions
The series will be available with a Netflix subscription. For subtitles, see our guide on how to display subtitles on Netflix. If you have picture problems, our article Netflix: black screen with sound offers a step-by-step method.
